Dr. Hwang was the former President & CEO of Samsung’s Semiconductor Business. He joined Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in 1989 and had been in charge of developing the world’s first 256Mb DRAM in 1994. In 2008, he was named the corporate technology officer of Samsung Electronics. And, in April 2010, he was named the National Chief Technology Officer and the Secretary General, the head of Office of Strategic R&D Planning in Korea. He has been adorned with distinguished awards such as the ISI Citation Classic Award (2000), the Technology Leadership and Innovations Award by Electronic Industries Alliance (2004), Best Scientist Award by Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (2006) and the Andy Grove Award (2006). He was also chosen as “25 Stars of Asia” by Businessweek (2003), “One of the Ten Big Thinkers” by Newsweek, (2005) and one of “Top Executives of 2005” by Asiamoney (2006). He hold BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University in Korea, and a Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Massachusetts.

He was a keynote speaker at the 2011 MIT GSW which was hosted in Seoul, South Korea.
